In the French village of Aluvil-Bellefos in Normandy, there is undoubtedly the most unusual chapel in the world. The ancient chapel is located inside a genuine oak tree, which is about 1200 years old! The height of the tree is 18 m, and its circumference is 15 m.
«Oak Chapel» - this is two chapels, one above the other, and you can ascend to the upper one via a beautiful spiral staircase that wraps around the trunk of the splendid tree.
According to legend, the local abbot Detrua, noticing the hollow inside the tree, decided to check how spacious it was, and promised a reward to every boy who could crawl inside. In the end, the abbot had to fork out money, because 40 boys fit inside the hollow of the trunk!
After that, in 1969, the abbot built there the Chapel of Our Lady of Peace, measuring 1.75 m in length, 1.17 m in width, and 2.3 m in height. Inside the chapel is an altar illuminated by two candles and a chandelier on the ceiling.
On the second level is a cell that the abbot built for his hermit friend – Abbot du Serso. He himself became the sole inhabitant of the cell throughout its history.
The old chapel has survived much, including a lightning strike in 1912 that split off half of the trunk. In 1988, a special metal frame was made to preserve and support the tree, which still encircles it today.
