An international competition for the opera project was announced, in which 223 applicants took part. According to one hypothesis, the chairman of the competition jury - American architect Eero Saarinen - chose the winner while in a state of alcohol intoxication. He simply blindly pulled out the now-famous sail project and announced that the opera would have such a look. The project's author, Jørn Utzon, did not expect to win the competition, because he had submitted a series of barely developed drawings that gave only a general idea of the structure.
