Under the Boat's Roof. 19.04.17

If you ever travel to France, take the opportunity to visit the secluded fishing village of Ékian, located fifty kilometers from the French port of Calais.

In this village there is a district consisting of houses whose roofs are overturned boats!

Cozy and modern, although they were built more than a hundred years ago, they differed in appearance and served as housing for those who could not afford a proper house. The name of the district with such houses is – Quarter of the Keels Hanging in the Air.

дом, где крыша - это перевернутая лодка

To prevent the roof from letting moisture in, in ancient times it was first coated with tar, and the house foundation was built of wood or stone. The interior of the house was minimalist, - there were few belongings, and the room was just one, where all family members ate and slept. The stove was both a source of heat and a way to cook food. There was hardly any light in the house, because the windows were small.

During World War II, the district was almost completely destroyed, and in the only remaining house there was the workshop of the artist Paul Kristol.

And although the district did not exist for 50 years after its destruction, in the 1990s it was decided to revive it in order to preserve traditions and attract tourists.
