The port area of Rio de Janeiro, which was the poorest and most crime-ridden just ten years ago, can now proudly present an outstanding project in every sense – the Floating Museum of Tomorrow!
The outstanding contemporary architect Santiago Calatrava designed the building, which runs along the entire length of the pier, extending into the harbor. Thanks to the fact that the museum is surrounded by pools on all sides, an optical illusion is created that it is floating.

Its area is 12,600 sq.m. and it includes two levels (for permanent and temporary exhibitions). The museum's appearance is quite unusual, resembling the skeleton of a prehistoric creature. According to the author's concept, the museum should connect the city with the bay. For this purpose, Calatrava used massive cantilevered overhangs that extend 75 m toward the new city square and 45 m toward the water. On the cantilevers themselves are installed louvers with built-in photovoltaic panels, which leads to a 40% reduction in energy consumption.

On the first floor of the museum are technical and administrative buildings, a café, and a lecture hall. On the second floor are the exhibition spaces. At a height of 10 m is an observation deck with a view of the harbor.

The exhibition features exhibits in five areas: Cosmos, Earth, Anthropocene, Tomorrow, and Present Moment. Visitors, using experiments and exhibition samples, can envision their scenarios for the development of life over the next 50 years.
